Africana Studies is a growing discipline. An increasing number of employers are seeking to fill positions with people who possess a cultural and historical analysis of Black people in the U.S., the African diaspora, and around the globe. As a discipline that is interdisciplinary and diasporic, African American ​Africana Studies specifically educates students in:

• Black political, cultural, philosophical and artistic thought and practice
• Black popular and mass culture
• Race in relation to the study of gender and sexuality
• Social justice through community engagement

This certificate program allows master’s and doctoral students in other disciplines to amplify the Afrocentric analysis in their own course of study. Some may simply want to explore a specific area reflected in their course of study. Others may wish to pursue employment for which a certificate in African American Studies is deemed an advantage.

New tools and packages are rapidly democratizing the field of data science, giving rise to the role of “citizen data scientists”—professionals who may not have deep programming skills but, with the right tools, are capable of leveraging advanced technologies as well as working with and leading teams of data scientists to create value and realize the potential of artificial intelligence. A recent Gartner study projects the number of citizen data scientists will grow five times faster than the number of expert data scientists in the next few years.

The Artificial Intelligence Innovation Certificate program is designed with the citizen data scientist in mind. You will examine AI-related concepts that lead to discovery of innovative solutions to business challenges. Key topics include data programming, machine learning and predictive analytics.

The Georgia State Artist Certificate in Music is a post-master’s certificate in either performance or conducting. The program is 18 semester hours and takes two semesters to complete. To be admitted into the Artist Certificate program, students must have either a master’s degree in music or equivalent professional experience.

The performance emphases consist of intensive, individualized instruction in performance and a recital. The conducting emphases consist of intensive, individualized instruction and a terminal project consisting of a public performance and a research document.

The program is open to exceptional students who are ready for doctoral- or professional-level instruction.

The mission of the Georgia State School of Music is to preserve, promote and advance humanity’s rich and expanding tradition of artistic music-making through performance, composition, education, and research in accordance with the urban and global initiatives of the university.

The Birth Through Five Graduate Certificate is an online program for professionals who currently work in early care and learning settings and individuals interested in pursuing careers within the diverse professional field of early care and childhood education.

This certificate program was designed with three specific objectives:

1. Provide a flexible professional development format for the early childhood workforce
2. Offer a quality, student-centered online teaching and learning approach to early childhood teachers’ preparation
3. Introduce students to the Early Childhood and Elementary Education Master of Arts in Creative and Innovative Education degree program

Geographic Information Science (GIS) technology is used every day, most often for mapping points of reference and data related to points on the Earth’s surface. GIS jobs are plentiful and growth in the industry is expected to continue in the coming years.

With the Georgia State GIS graduate certificate, you will be able to start or advance your career in:

The faculty and staff in the Georgia State University Department of Geosciences are well networked in GIS-related industries and firms in the Atlanta area and beyond. Through applied projects, students will gain real-world experience in utilizing mapping and geospatial technologies to address pressing social and environmental concerns.

Our faculty have expertise in GIS, geography and geology, and we specialize in the social and environmental dimensions of water, environmental geochemistry, global climate change and solving urban environmental problems.

All courses required to earn the certificate can be completed online. Courses are taught asynchronously. There may be opportunities for workshops or tutorial session on campus.
